Rex "X-Ray" Washburn is a camper at Camp Green Lake. He is portrayed by Brendan Jeferson in the film.

History

At Camp Green Lake

Rex was placed in D-Tent. He received the nickname "X-Ray" at camp due to wearing thick glasses. It is also pig Latin for "Rex". X-ray was the unofficial leader of D-Tent, he was the first of the campers to be sent to Camp Green Lake. In the beginning of the movie Stanley Yelnats IV was insulted by X-ray, who called him a Neanderthal. They later became friends. One day while X-ray was digging his hole Stanley found a fossil and showed it to Mr Pendanski in hopes to get a day off. After Mr Pendanski left, X-ray went up to Stanley and said, That was some lame crap you pulled. Look, man, you ever find anything, give it to me, you understand? I’ve been here for over six months and never found anything. No one has. Why should you get a day off when you just got here? Stanley agreed to give everything he finds to X-ray because Stanley does not want to get on his bad side. In the Rec Room, X-Ray convinced Stanley and the Lump to stop fighting due to fear of The Warden. When Stanley earned his nickname ‘caveman’ X-ray moves him up in the line to get water, symbolising that Stanley has moved up socially. One day when they were out digging Stanley finds something in his hole and calls over X-ray to look at it. After some discussion about if it’s a shotgun shell or not the campers decide it is a lipstick tube because of the initials K.B engraved in a heart on the tube. X-ray then says he’ll show it to Pendanski and get the rest of the day off, causing Stanley to protest because X-ray had already dug his hole. This clearly irritated X-ray and Stanley, not wanting to get on his bad side, recovers by suggesting that he gives it in the day after to get more of the day off. The next day X-ray shows Pendanski the treasure and the warden gets called to the area that D tent were digging in. The warden orders Pendanski to drive X-ray back to camp.Give him double shower tokens and a snack. When Stanley and Zero make an agreement for Zero to dig part of Stanley’s hole in exchange for reading and writing lessons, the others do not like this and find it unfair. X-ray and Squid come up to the pair while they’re digging Stanley’s hole and X-ray refers to Zero as Stanley’s own personal slave. After Stanley found Kissing Kate's treasure and was freed from Camp Green Lake in the books, everyone cheered for Stanley other than X-ray as he was jealous of Stanley having more influence on everyone than him. In the film however, X-ray was happy for Stanley and wished him good luck in the real world outside of camp.

After Camp Green Lake

X-Ray was released from Camp Green Lake after it was closed down.  In the novel's sequel Small Steps, he is a minor character. He formerly lived in Lubbock and moved to Austin after he was released at the age of 17. He drives a rusted Honda Civic with a heavily dented driver's door and is involved in a ticket scalping scheme to see pop star Kaira De Leon by selling 12 tickets to fans. The scheme goes pear-shaped after X-Ray confessed to Armpit that tickets were originally valued at $55 each, then $60 due to having a $5 service charge and that he made two copies of the last two tickets which were counterfeit, selling the real ones to ticket sellers, Felix and Moses. He is given the all clear afterwards and the case is closed.

X-Ray had been reluctant to sell the tickets at first to which he promised them to a friend which was Armpit.
